Poverty Awareness Month: Preparing for our 12th season of free tax help

January is poverty awareness monthJanuary is Poverty Awareness Month so we’ve put together a number of easy ways for you to take action this month to help fight poverty. They’ll include opportunities to learn more about poverty and hunger in our region and the U.S., and to spread the word.

For example: The Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC) and Child Tax Credits (CTC) do more to lift working families out of poverty than any other program in the country. Since 2003, Just Harvest has helped low-income individuals and families access these and other credits via our free tax service, now at four locations across the metropolitan area.

The first of these – our South Side tax site – will open on January 20. Help us set it up on January 10. It’s a wonderfully big room with huge windows (tons of natural light!) and wall-to-wall carpeting – but it’s empty. We need to get desks, chairs, and computers moved in, so we need folks who can do some heavy lifting. Or at least heavy sliding. 😉
