Week 26: Shop local this week to support fresh food access for all

farmers market veggiesAre you cooking the whole Thanksgiving meal this year? Just need to bring a side dish somewhere? Or are you already looking past turkey day to the post-event holiday shopping?

All the expectations for this time of year can be stressful, especially if you’re on a tight budget. So let’s take a deep breath and take a moment to reflect on what makes it all worth it: the spirit of togetherness, gratitude, and giving.

Instead of battling the crowds at the grocery stores to get stuff that spent weeks on a truck, Thanksgiving is a great opportunity to come out and buy directly from some of the local farms that work year-round to grow this region’s food. By supporting these farmers and the communities that host farmers markets, you’ll truly be giving your hard-working neighbors something to be thankful for.

Just Harvest’s Fresh Access program is wrapping up its 2017 season this week on Wednesday. Why not stop by to get the yams, sweet potatoes, carrots, Brussel sprouts, green beans, onions, garlic, and other veggies, greens, and herbs (and apples, pears, pie pumpkins, and baked goods!) you need for the meal? They’re guaranteed to be fresh and flavorful!

And this Saturday, stop by for a snack or some staples at one of our Fresh Corners stores where we’re helping to provide a fresh produce shopping option in neighborhoods without any. These corner stores really put the “small” in small business, but their owners have big dreams of helping their customers be healthier and happier.
