County tax program pushes for expansion

Katie Hopkins puts in long days that include a one-hour commute each way to and from her job in Wheeling, W.Va., where she is an associate at law firm Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe.

Some people who travel that much during the week might savor commitment-free weekends. But, from late January through mid April, the 28-year-old Point Breeze resident expects to spend part of each Saturday helping people with low incomes file their tax returns.

The upcoming tax season will be her seventh consecutive year as a volunteer for the free tax preparation program sponsored by the United Way of Allegheny County and the Money in Your Pocket Coalition….
